Demolition Begins – St Andrew’s Hostel

The Shire of Katanning welcomes the State Government’s commencement of works to demolish St Andrew’s Hostel, a site where children suffered horrific abuse at the hands of one of the state’s worst pedophile, Dennis McKenna, during the 1970s and 1980s.

Shire President Kristy D’Aprile acknowledged Recovery Matter’s efforts to gather input from survivors and the broader community on the future of the site. "We recognize the site's painful history and fully support the Minister of Education’s decision last August to demolish it. But it’s the act of bringing this building down that truly marks a clear and welcomed step forward—one that brings immense relief, especially to the victims.”

The Council understands the significant trauma and harrowing history associated with the site.

“Our priority remains the well-being of survivors and their families and we believe that removing the building is an important step in acknowledging the past and fostering healing for survivors, their families and the broader community.”

Mrs D’Aprile commended the Education Minister’s decision to demolish the building and prepare the land for future use, stating, “We hope that clearing the site will allow survivors and the broader community to move forward. It is my hope that the land can be repurposed in a way that brings positive outcomes for the community. However, it is important that we not forget and that we use this as a reminder to never take the safety of our children for granted.

“The Shire of Katanning supports the Department of Education’s project to construct a memorial to serve as a lasting tribute to survivors and a reminder of the responsibility to safeguard children.

“We extend our gratitude to the victims and members of the community, both past and present, for their engagement on this matter. We will continue to work collaboratively to ensure that Katanning remains a place of inclusivity, respect, and support for all.”
