Heritage Sites
There are more than 109 Heritage Listed buildings and Places in Katanning which can be viewed by visiting the State Heritage Office website.
The State Register of Heritage Places is a statutory list of places that represent the story of Western Australia’s history and development.
Places include buildings, structures, gardens, cemeteries, memorials, landscapes and archaeological sites.
Entry in the Register is reserved for places of State cultural heritage significance and is the highest recognition afforded at the State level. Heritage places are entered in the State Register after an assessment and registration process which includes extensive consultation with owners, local governments and other stakeholders.
The majority of the Heritage Listed Buildings and Places in Katanning are of ‘Local Significance’ and are in the Shire of Katanning Municipal Heritage Inventory (MHI). There are seventeen also on the State Register. The various listing and different categories affect development, use, conservation, protection and funding. The State Heritage Office provides an overview and explanation of the listings. Places listed in the MHI are ranked from Category 1 to 5, based on Conservation Value and Level of Significance. The Heritage Protection requirements within the Deemed Provisions of the Planning and Development [Local planning Scheme] Regulations 2015, as set out in Schedule 2, Part 3 and Part 9 Clause 67, in particular criteria k – n may also apply.
Buildings in Austral Tce (from the Clive St/Premier Mill Hotel to the King George Hostel/cnr Albion Street) are within a listed Heritage Precinct; It is Place No 1338. Alterations, signage and new works will generally require Development Approval.
