Royalties for Regions delivers Katanning Heritage Centre

Katanning is set for a major transformation following 13 May 2016 announcement in the 2016-17 State Budget of a $15.7 million Royalties for Regions investment into the Katanning Heritage Centre project.

Member for Wagin Terry Waldron MLA said the local project formed part of an outstanding $3.78 billion Royalties for Regions investment, over the next four years, to build vibrant regions with strong economies through initiatives in health, community services, education, arts, Aboriginal development initiatives, agriculture, tourism and economic development.

“The $15.7 million in Royalties for Regions funding will be used to transform a currently underutilised reserve at Piesse Lake into a landscaped green space and recreation area with new housing lots made available, adjacent to the lake,” Mr Waldron said.

Mr Waldron said: “This exciting project will enhance Katanning’s visitor experience and develop the town’s tourism potential by providing an attractive and unique welcome precinct at the main entry to town.” Mr Waldron described the money as ‘much more than just a grant’.

“I see this funding as an important investment into the local town, its surrounds, the Great Southern region in general, and in Katanning’s viability and sustainability. Locals and visitors will benefit from these upgrades for many years to come,” he said.

The Nationals WA Candidate for Roe, and Katanning local, Peter Rundle praised the announcement, saying it would be a great economic driver for the region.

“The Katanning Heritage Centre project will complement other big State Government investments such as the $34.5 million Katanning hospital upgrade, $26 million Katanning saleyards project and $8.7 million Main Street Revitalisation initiative,” Mr Rundle said.

The Heritage Centre project would include improvements to Katanning’s iconic all ages playground; park amenity enhancements; skate-street park; construction of a tourist visitor centre and community run museum; creation of a Botanic Garden and a medium density residential land development adjacent to the Botanic Garden and Piesse Lake.

The significant project will also include the relocation of the Katanning bowling greens to the Katanning sports club.

The project is expected to be completed in 2019.
