Fruit Fly Baiting

As a service to the community, the Shire of Katanning carries out Fruit Fly Baiting from November to April, with the aim of eradicating fruit fly from our town.

ALL FRUIT TREES AND ORNAMENTAL TREES IN THE KATANNING TOWNSITE SHOULD BE BAITED

The Department of Agriculture has distributed monitoring traps strategically placed across the town to ensure the effectiveness of the program, with trained Shire employees undertaking the baiting.

Baiting will be conducted between 6.00 am – 10.00 am each weekday. It would be appreciated if dogs could be restrained between these times. Spraying will NOT be carried out over the Christmas and New Year public holidays.

Residents with fruit trees are asked to assist this program by ensuring they are registered for fruit fly baiting and by following these guidelines:

  • Pick all fruit as soon as it ripens
  • Pick up all fallen fruit every day
  • Destroy infested fruit by soaking in water and kerosene for three days, or placing in a plastic bag and leaving in full sun for three to four days.
  • If you are a dog owner, restrain your dog on days when the baiting is being carried out on your property.
  • To enable access, leave your gates unlocked on baiting days.
